Prevention Ethics

Description: The participants will learn the role and application of ethics in substance abuse prevention. Using scenarios and interactive activities, participants will explore the six standards in the Prevention Code of Ethics.

Facilitator: Brent Oto, MA, CPS. Mr. Oto currently is the 9th Mission Support Command Army Reserve, Suicide Prevention Program Manager located at Fort Shafter, Hawaii. He served eleven years with the U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii as the SPPM and ASAP instructor and serves as the Chair of the Joint Military Suicide Prevention Task Force, Co-Chair for the Prevent Suicide Hawaii Task Force 2019-2021 and current member of the Oahu Suicide Task Force. Mr. Oto served in the Hawaii Army National Guard and retired after twenty years of active service duty and reserve time in the rank of Sargent First Class as an 11B infantryman, Calvary scout and ending his career as a Tactical NCO for Officer Candidate School. Mr. Oto has been working in substance use education and suicide prevention field since 2000, and conducts classes for the state & federal government, non-profits within local communities. Mr. Oto has a Master’s degree in Human Service with a Specializing in Mental Health Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He is credentialed and certified by the State of Hawaii, Department of Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division as a Certified Prevention Specialist. Mr. Oto is a retired Army veteran and also serves as a volunteer with the Hawaii Veterans Treatment Court.

Target Audience: Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) and those that are applicants.
