SPF 101: Understanding the Basics of the Strategic Prevention Framework

This training will provide an overview to SAMHSA's evidence-based process for planning and implementing substance use prevention known as the Strategic Prevention Framework.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the background of the Strategic Prevention Framework
  2. Identify the steps of the Strategic Prevention Framework.
  3. Have a basic understanding of how to apply the steps to their work in prevention.

Continuing Education (CEs): This course provides 2.0 hours of continuing education credits (pending approval) for the Certified Prevention Specialist and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor credentials.

Targeted Audience: The target audience for this training is for substance use prevention and treatment providers and stakeholders who deliver programs to individuals, families, and groups, and those work work in community coalitions. This training is also relevant to those interested in understanding the basics of substance use prevention work. This training is a virtual training that will take place over the Zoom platform. Participants must have access to audio and video capabilities on the Zoom platform in order to fully participate in the program and receive continuing education credits.

Trainer Information:

Rick Collins is a Cincinnati, OH native who has resided in Hawai‘i since 2003. He specializes in public health policy on alcohol and other drugs. He is the co-founder of the Hawai‘i Alcohol Policy Alliance and the Maui Coalition for Drug-Free Youth, and he currently serves as Coalition Director for three community coalitions across Hawai‘i. His experience includes building new community coalitions, community organizing, and building coalition capacity to implement community-level policy strategies to reduce the harms of substance use. Rick is a certified Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) trainer, and he currently serves as a board member for the US Alcohol Policy Alliance. He is a Certified Prevention Specialist and holds an MS in Counseling Psychology from Chaminade University.
